The great thing is that you can have lots of fun playing around with the Layer Style settings to create your own custom gel text effect, or if you prefer, you can use the settings I'm using in the tutorial. When we're done creating the effect, we're going to save it as a preset style which we can then apply to other text instantly, and at the end, we'll see how to change the color of the effect, which may not be quite as straightforward as you think.

Here's the gel text effect we're going for:

Let's get started!!

Step 1: Open A New Photoshop Document

Go up to the File menu at the top of the screen and choose New... to bring up Photoshop's New Document dialog box and enter a width and height for your document. I'm going to use a preset size of 640x480 pixels. Click OK to create your new document:

Photoshop Tutorials: Create a new document in Photoshop.

Step 2: Choose A Color For Your Text

Select the Type tool from the Tools palette:

Photoshop Tutorials: Choose the Type tool from the Tools palette.

You can also press T on your keyboard to quickly select it. Then, with the Type tool selected, go up to the Options Bar at the top of the screen and click on the text color swatch:

Photoshop Tutorials: With the Type tool selected, click on the text color swatch in the Options Bar.

This will bring up Photoshop's Color Picker. Choose a color for the text. I'm going to choose a light blue for mine:

Photoshop Tutorials: Choose a color for your text with Photoshop's Color Picker.

Click OK once you've chosen a color to exit out of the Color Picker.

Step 3: Enter Your Text

Choose a font from the Options Bar. I'm using "Bauhaus 93". Then click inside your Document Window and enter your text. I'm going to type the word "photo":

Photoshop Tutorials: Enter your text into the document.

Step 4: Use "Free Transform" To Resize The Text If Needed

I'm going to enlarge my text a little using Photoshop's Free Transform command. With my text layer selected in the Layers palette, I'm going to use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+T (Win) / Command+T (Mac) to bring up the Free Transform box and handles around my text. Then I'm going to hold down Shift+Alt (Win) / Shift+Option (Mac) and drag out one of the corner handles to enlarge my text. Holding Shift constrains the text proportions, and holding Alt/Option forces the text to resize from the center:

Photoshop Tutorials: Use Free Transform to enlarge the text if needed.

Step 5: Select The "Drop Shadow" Layer Style

We're going to head into the wacky world of Layer Styles at this point, and the first Layer Style we're going to add to the text is a drop shadow.

Before we continue, I just want to say again that you should feel free to experiment with the different settings we're using for this effect. You don't have to use the specific settings I'll be using. There's lots of wiggle room to play around with in creating this gel text effect.

Now let's add our drop shadow. Click on the Layer Style icon at the bottom of the Layers palette:

Photoshop Tutorials: With the text layer selected, click on the "Layer Styles" icon at the bottom of the Layers palette.

Select Drop Shadow from the list:

Photoshop Tutorials: Select "Drop Shadow" from the list of Layer Styles.

This brings up Photoshop's Layer Style dialog box set to the Drop Shadow options in the middle column:

Step 6: Choose A Color For The Drop Shadow And Apply It

Click on the Drop Shadow color swatch:

Photoshop Tutorials: Click on the Drop Shadow's color swatch to choose a color.

This will bring up the Color Picker. Rather than choosing a color in the Color Picker, hover your mouse over the text, which will turn your mouse cursor into the Eyedropper, and click on the text to sample its color:

Photoshop Tutorials: Click anywhere on the text to sample the color.

Then go to the Color Picker and select a darker shade of that color to use for the drop shadow:

Photoshop Tutorials: Select a different shade of the sampled color in the Color Picker to use for the drop shadow.

Click OK to exit out of the Color Picker, and your drop shadow will appear in the color you selected:

Photoshop Tutorials: The drop shadow applied to the text using the color chosen in the Color Picker.

Don't click OK in the Layer Style dialog box yet. We've only just begun.

Step 7: Apply An "Inner Shadow" Layer Style

Click directly on the words Inner Shadow in the Layer Style menu on the left of the Layer Style dialog box, directly below "Drop Shadow":

Photoshop Tutorials: Click directly on the words "Inner Shadow" below "Drop Shadow" in the menu on the left of the Layer Style dialog box.

The first thing we're going to do here is select a color to use for the Inner Shadow, just as we did for the Drop Shadow. Click on the Inner Shadow color swatch:

Photoshop Tutorials: Click on the Inner Style color swatch to choose a color.

This will bring up Photoshop's Color Picker. Just as we did with the Drop Shadow, rather than selecting a color directly in the Color Picker, move your mouse over the text and click on it to sample the text color:

Photoshop Tutorials: Click anywhere on the text once again to sample the color.

Then select a darker shade of the color in the Color Picker to use for the Inner Shadow:

Photoshop Tutorials: Select a different shade of the sampled color in the Color Picker to use for the inner shadow.

Click OK to exit out of the Color Picker once again. The inner shadow will appear in the color you selected:

Photoshop Tutorials: The Inner Shadow is now applied to the text using the color selected.

I'm going to increase the size of my Inner Shadow effect by clicking on the Size slider and dragging it to the right. I'll increase mine to about 16 pixels:

Photoshop Tutorials: Increase the size of the Inner Shadow effect by dragging the "Size" slider to the right.

Here's the result after increasing the Inner Shadow size:

Photoshop Tutorials: The effect so far after increasing the Inner Shadow size to 16 pixels.

Step 8: Apply An "Outer Glow" Layer Style

Click directly on the words Outer Glow in the Layer Style menu on the left of the Layer Style dialog box, directly below "Inner Shadow":

Photoshop Tutorials: Click directly on the words "Outer Glow" in the menu on the left of the Layer Style dialog box.

Once again, the first thing we're going to do is select a color for our Outer Glow, the same way we've done it for the Drop Shadow and Inner Glow. First, click on the Outer Glow color swatch:

Photoshop Tutorials: Click on the Outer Glow color swatch to choose a color.

This brings up the Color Picker. Click directly on the text once again to sample the color. Then go back to the Color Picker, but this time, rather than choosing a darker shade of the color, choose a lighter shade:

Photoshop Tutorials: Choose a lighter shade of the text color this time to use for the Outer Glow effect.

Click OK to exit out of the Color Picker.

With my color applied, I'm going to change a few of the other Outer Glow options. Again, feel free to experiment here on your own, but if you want to follow along, here's the settings I'm using. First, lower the Opacity value at the top to around 60%. Then, in the "Elements" section in the middle, increase the Spread to around 15% and the Size to about 10 pixels:

Photoshop Tutorials: Make the changes circled in red above to the Outer Glow options.

Here's my result after making the changes:

Photoshop Tutorials: The effect so far after applying the "Outer Glow" layer style.

Step 9: Apply An "Inner Glow" Layer Style

Click directly on the words Inner Glow in the Layer Style menu on the left of the Layer Style dialog box, directly below "Outer Glow":

Photoshop Tutorials: Click directly on the words "Inner Glow" in the menu on the left of the Layer Style dialog box.

What are we going to do first? Yep, we're going to pick a color to use for the Inner Glow. Go ahead and click on the Inner Glow color swatch:

Photoshop Tutorials: Click on the Inner Glow color swatch to choose a color.

This brings up the Color Picker. This time, rather than clicking on the text color itself and then selecting a darker shade in the Color Picker, just click on one of the darker areas in the text. We'll use that color for the Inner Glow:

Photoshop Tutorials: Click on a darker color in the text to sample it and use it for the Inner Glow effect.

Click OK in the Color Picker to exit out of it once you've sampled your color.

We have our darker color selected, but by default, the blend mode for the Inner Shadow is set to "Screen", which means we're not going to see our darker color. Basically, we need to change the effect from an inner "glow" to an inner "shadow", and for that, all we need to do is change the blend mode from "Screen" to Multiply:

Photoshop Tutorials: Click on the down-pointing arrow and change the blend mode for the Inner Glow effect to "Multiply".

I'm going to change a few other options here as well for the Inner Glow. First, I'm going to lower the Opacity value to around 50%. Then, in the "Elements" section in the middle, I'm going to raise the Choke value to about 10% and the Size value to 13 pixels:

Photoshop Tutorials: Change the options circled in red above for the Inner Glow.

Again, feel free to experiment with those values on your own.

Here's my effect so far with the Inner Glow applied:

Photoshop Tutorials: The effect after applying the Inner Glow layer style.

Step 10: Apply The "Bevel and Emboss" Layer Style

We're going to add the Bevel and Emboss style next, so click directly on the words Inner Glow in the Layer Style menu on the left of the Layer Style dialog box, directly below "Inner Glow":

Photoshop Tutorials: Click directly on the words "Bevel and Emboss" in the menu on the left of the Layer Style dialog box.

This time there's no colors to choose. Instead, there's a few options that need to be changed. I know I've already said it a few times, but you don't need to use these specific settings for your effect. In fact, you'll probably need to play around with them a little if you're using a different font type or size. However, having said that, here's the settings I've used in the Bevel and Emboss options:

Photoshop Tutorials: Change the options circled in red above.

First, I increased the Size to about 16 pixels. Then, in the "Shading" section, I unchecked Use Global Light, set the Angle to 90° and set the Altitude to 75°. Then, at the very bottom, I dragged the slider bar for the Shadow Mode option all the way to the left to set its value to 0%, since we already have more than enough shadows in the effect.

We're going to add the "Contour" effect in here as well, so click directly on the word Contour in the menu on the left. It's below "Bevel and Emboss":

Photoshop Tutorials: Click directly on the word "Contour" in the left menu.

In the Contour options, click on the down-pointing arrow to the right of the Contour preview thumbnail, then click on the Half Round option to select it (it's the first one on the left, bottom row):

Photoshop Tutorials: Click the down-pointing arrow and select the "Half Round" contour, bottom row, far left.

Here's my text after applying the Bevel and Emboss filter:

Photoshop Tutorials: The effect after applying the "Bevel and Emboss" style.

Step 11: Apply The "Satin" Layer Style

One more layer style to apply, and it's the "Satin" style, so click directly on the word Satin in the Layer Style menu on the left of the Layer Style dialog box, directly below "Texture":

Photoshop Tutorials: Click directly on the word "Satin" in the menu on the left of the Layer Style dialog box.

We're back to choosing a color once again, this time for the Satin effect, so click on the Satin color swatch:

Photoshop Tutorials: Click the color swatch to choose a color for the Satin layer style.

Then click in the text to sample a darker shade of the text color. If the colors in your text turned strange when you clicked on the word "Satin" in the menu on the left, don't worry. Just click once anywhere on the text and the colors will revert back to the way they should be. Then click on any darker area to sample that color:

Photoshop Tutorials: Click in a darker area of the text to sample that color to use with the Satin layer style.

As soon as you click your mouse to sample a color, you'll see the Satin effect apply itself using that color. If you want, you can keep clicking around inside the text to choose a different color, and the Satin effect will be updated each time you click, so you can keep clicking until you find a dark shade you're happy with. It's basically a live preview of the effect.

Once you have your color selected, click OK in the Color Picker to exit out of it, then make the changes I've circled below:

Photoshop Tutorials: Change the Satin options circled in red above.

In the case of the Satin effect, you're really going to want to experiment with these settings yourself, but for the sake of following along, first I changed the Angle to 75°. Then I increased the Distance to 43 pixels and the Size to 54 pixels. Finally, I clicked on the down-pointing arrow to the right of the Contour preview thumbnail and chose the Ring contour, which is the second one from the left, bottom row.

Here's my text after applying the Satin filter:

Photoshop Tutorials: The effect after applying the "Satin" style.

Step 12: Save The Layer Style

We're done adding layer styles at this point, but before you close out of the Layer Style dialog box, click the New Style button on the right:

Photoshop Tutorials: Click the "New Style" button on the right.

We're going to save this gel effect style so that we can re-use it whenever we want. When you click the button, Photoshop pops up the New Style dialog box. I'm going to name my new style "Gel effect":

Photoshop Tutorials: Photoshop's "New Style" dialog box. Name the new style "Gel effect".

Then I'll click OK and I now have my style saved in Photoshop. Let's see how we can instantly apply it to something else.

Since I already have the word "photo" entered into my document window, I'm going to grab my Type tool once again from the Tools palette and this time, I'll enter the word "shop" below it. I'm also going to use the Free Transform command to resize it so it's the same size as the word "photo", and I'm going to rotate it as well. Here's what it looks like at the moment:

Photoshop Tutorials: Click in a darker area of the text to sample that color to use with the Satin layer style.

Right now, the word "shop" is using nothing more than the original text color, but I want it to have the same "gel effect" I created with the word "photo". I could go through all the steps again and re-create the layer style, but thankfully, I don't have to because I was smart enough to save the effect as a new style. Where can I find the style? It's in Photoshop's Styles palette, located at the very bottom:

Photoshop Tutorials: Photoshop's "Styles" palette with my saved "Gel effect" style at the bottom of the list of available preset styles.

To apply it to my text, all I have to do is make sure I have the "shop" text layer selected in the Layers palette, and then click on the "Gel effect" style in the Styles palette. The effect is instantly added to the text:

Photoshop Tutorials: The "Gel effect" style is instantly applied to the new text.

What if I wanted the word "shop" to be a different color though? It's easy to change the color, but there's a bit of a trick to it, as we'll see next.

Step 13: Changing The Color Of The Gel Text Effect

We're done creating the "gel" effect using layer styles, we've saved it as a new style named "Gel effect", and we've instantly applied it to the word "shop". But what if I want the word "shop" to be a different color? You're probably thinking "Easy, just use a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer". So let's try that and see if it works.

I'll use Hue/Saturation to change the color of the word "shop" from blue to pink. Here's the result:

Photoshop Tutorials: The word "shop" is now pink after applying "Hue/Saturation".

The word itself has turned pink, but do you see the problem? The layer styles are still blue. The Hue/Saturation adjustment had no effect on them. If we want to change both the text color and the layer styles color, we need to use a bit of a trick.

With the "shop" layer still selected in the Layers palette, use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+G (Win) / Command+G (Mac) to place the "shop" layer into a Layer Group, which Photoshop names "Group 1":

Photoshop Tutorials: Press "Ctrl+G" (Win) / "Command+G" (Mac) to place the "shop" layer into a Layer Group.

We can see in the Layers palette above that the "shop" layer is now inside the Layer Group. Next, we need to change the blend mode for the Layer Group from its default of "Pass Through" to Normal:

Photoshop Tutorials: With the Layer Group selected, change its blend mode from "Pass Through" to "Normal".

Now click on the "shop" layer to select it and then click on the New Adjustment Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers palette:

Photoshop Tutorials: With the "shop" layer selected, click on the "New Adjustment Layer" icon at the bottom of the Layers palette.

Select Hue/Saturation from the list:

Photoshop Tutorials: Select "Hue/Saturation" from the list of Adjustment Layers.

When the Hue/Saturation dialog box appears, drag the Hue slider to change the color of the text:

Photoshop Tutorials: Change the color of the text by dragging the "Hue" slider.

Keep an eye on your text in the Document Window as you're dragging the slider. When you're happy with the new color, click OK to exit out of the Hue/Saturation dialog box, and this time, because the "shop" layer was placed inside a Layer Group, the layer styles are now colored along with the text itself:

Photoshop Tutorials: The final result.

And there we have it!
from http://www.photoshopessentials.com/

Give Your Photos a Retro Comic Book Effect

How about a fun effect for your incredibly boring photo albums? Creating a old comic book effect for your photos is easy and the results are visually appealing. More fun is achieved when adding captions to your photos using comic book fonts and design elements.
This tutorial will show you how to give a comic book look to your photos using a couple of filters and some additional decorations.

Click on the image below to see a larger and more clear image of the final results.

Original image by Rubén Colorado

Old halftone print effect

Download and open this photo in Photoshop. Now we are going to increase the overall contrast of the picture by burning it a bit. Go to IMAGE > ADJUSTMENTS > LEVELS…With this image we are going to set the INPUT LEVELS to 60 / 1.00 / 220. But this is only for this example. Choose the best settings for each photo.

In this step we are going to give the photo an illustrated look with some graininess to give the illusion of an old and bad quality paper. It is not a realistic effect, it is just some distortion to the image to help us achieve the final look. Go to FILTERS > ARTISTIC > FILM GRAIN. In this case we are going to use: GRAIN: 4, HIGHLIGHT AREA: 0, INTENSITY: 10. Try different settings for different photos.

Duplicate the layer and name the new layer HALFTONE

In this step we are going apply a halftone pattern to the image to give the final old comic book printing effect. Go to FILTER > PIXELATE > COLOR HALFTONE. Set MAX RADIUS: 4 and leave the rest with the default values. Press OK and then go to the LAYERS PALETTE and set the BLENDING MODE to DARKEN.

Adding comic book elements to the picture

The effect looks nice so far. It is not a realistic old comic book effect, it simple resembles that look. To make it more real, now comes the fun part. We are going to add some unique elements that are very popular on comic books and strips
Select the HALFTONE layer and set a STROKE LAYER STYLE of WIDTH: 20px, POSITION: Inside and COLOR: #F5ECE1.

Add a new layer and draw a small rectangle at the top left of the frame of the image. Give it a STROKE of 3 pixels and paint it orange. An orange to yellow gradient looks better. Draw another rectangle, a bit larger this time, on the lower left corner of the frame. Give it a STROKE of 3 pixels and paint it white. The final result should be like the one below:

Lets add a border to the image: Add a new empty layer above the layer containing the rectangles we created in the previous step. Select the RECTANGLE SELECTION TOOL from the TOOLS PALETTE. Draw a selection from the top left (right inside the frame) to the bottom right border of the image.

Go to EDIT > STROKE, set WIDTH: 4px, COLOR: BLACK, LOCATION CENTER and press OK.

DESELECT the current selection and go to FILTER > BLUR > BLUR MORE. Then apply a small distortion using FILTER > DISTORT > RIPPLE… (Amount 20%, Size Medium). Now, lets sharpen the stroke a bit with FILTER > SHARPEN MORE and there you have a nice simulated hand drawn border.

Adding captions using a comic book font

To add captions to the photo you can use any font you like, but only using fonts specially designed for comic books you will be able to achieve the desired look. Download the free font Digital Strip and install it. At the end of this article you will find a lot of free and commercial comic book fonts and resources.

Using the Digital Strip font you’ve just downloaded, type a date on the top orange rectangle. Play with the first letter of the text by adding a stroke, a shadow and a bright contrasting color.

Then write a caption for the photo at the bottom white rectangle. Highlighting some words in bold also looks good.

And that’s all. Your image should look similar to the one below:

Click on the image to see a larger and uncompressed version.

Membuat Bendera Kusut

Hari ini kita akan membahas mengenai efek bendera kusut pada photo..

Mungkin anda sudah penasaran tentang cara pembuatan nya..

Lets we seee...

Pertama buka gambar kain atau download aja.. klik gambarnya untuk memperbesar .. lalu klik kanan kainnya trus save image as ..

buka di photoshop terus di save ke psd file .. jadi kain.psd

gambar kain nya gak usah ditutup.. biar aja kebuka.. nanti gambar kainnya dipake.

Buka dokumen baru

bikin kotak pake rectangle marque tool terus warnain dengan warna merah.. buat seperti bendera kita.

Tekan CTRL + D untuk menghilangkan seleksi..

Klik Filter > distort > Displace

tekan Ok.. lalu pilih file Kain.psd

Drag ( tarik sambil tekan mouse -red ) gambar kain ke gambar bendera

di pas- pas in deh gambar kain nya sehingga sama dengan gambar bendera .. For this tutorial we will apply a few simple techniques using Adobe Photoshop.

Start off with a new document 540×125 pixels with a white background.

Create a new layer. Using the rounded rectangle tool with a 10px radius, create a selection similar to the one below and fill it with black #00000.

Now create a new layer and add a circle. Hold down the control key to make a perfect circle, and then drag from the top of the box to the bottom, then side ways. I will use red for this so that it is easy to see.

Now select the move tool and nudge the layer left using the arrow keys until you get something that looks like this.

Now you need to merge the layer with the rounded rectangle layer. To do this, simply select the layer with the circle and press ctrl+ e. You should end up with 2 layers, the background and the shape you created.

Now we need to apply some blending options to give the shape some style. Right click on the Layer with the shape and select blending options.

Now apply the following blending options to your shape.

Gradient Overlay:

Here is the gradient we used:

Drop Shadow:

<ins style="border: medium none ; margin: 0pt; padding: 0pt; height: 250px; position: relative; visibility: visible; width: 300px;"><ins style="border: medium none ; margin: 0pt; padding: 0pt; display: block; height: 250px; position: relative; visibility: visible; width: 300px;"></ins></ins>

and Stroke:

When you are finished with all the effects click the ok button to apply them. Your image should look something like this.

Now we will have to add our search box. Create a new layer. Use the rounded rectangle tool with white as your foreground color and a radius of 6px to create a shape like below.

Apply the following blending options to your search box.

Inner shadow:

Click ok to apply the effect. Your image should look like this now.

Next we will add the search button. Create a new layer. Using the same rectangle tool (radius 6px, color #ffffff) make a selection like below.

Apply the following blending options to the search button:

Gradient Overlay:

Here are the gradient settings:

Inner Glow:

Apply the changes. Your image should now look like this.

Now we need to make the button look glossy. Ctrl + click on the layer to select the button. Then using the rectangle marquee tool, press and hold alt then drag the shape over the bottom of the rectangle to select only the bottom of the button.

On the Photoshop Menu, go to Select > Modify > Contract. Contract the selection by 2px and press ok. Create a new layer then fill the shape with white #ffffff by pressing alt + backspace. Your button should now look like this.

Now adjust the opacity of the white layer to 55%.

Your button should look like this

Type the word search on top of the box using the text tool with Arial Black 18pt white as your font. Apply a stroke to the text layer.

<ins style="border: medium none ; margin: 0pt; padding: 0pt; height: 60px; position: relative; visibility: visible; width: 468px;"><ins style="border: medium none ; margin: 0pt; padding: 0pt; display: block; height: 60px; position: relative; visibility: visible; width: 468px;"></ins></ins>

Apply the effect and you should have something like this.

Now we need to add a logo. Create a new layer and make a selection with the elliptical marquee tool. Fill it in with any color.

Now apply the following blending options that you did for the search button. The easy way to do this is to right click on the search button layer and select blending options. Then click styles at the top and click new style. Name your style and then exit.

Now right click the circle layer and select blending options. Click the style button and again and select the style we just saved. Apply the style and your image should look like this.

We use the same technique that we did for the search button to apply a glossy layer to our circle. Ctrl + Click the layer to select it. Contract the selection by 2 pixels. Create a new layer then fill the circle with white. Reduce the opacity to 55px. Refer to the previous steps if you need more help. You should have something like this.

Now make a selection with the elliptical marquee tool over top your circle and delete it to so that it will look like this.

Now create a new layer and add your logo. I will use a rabbit because my search engine is speedy like that. You can find the rabbit in the custom shape tool if you want to add it. Then I added a 2px border like the search text. Then you can add your tag line and you are finished.

Burton’s World tutorial

In this tutorial you will learn in a few simple steps how to create a world that looks like it came from the mind of Tim Burton himself. The tutorial is very simple and doesn’t require much technical knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, but rather, teaches you how to use your imagination to create an atmospheric piece of art.
This tutorial was created by Vladimir Petkovic and you can contact him and see more of his great art at http://cuberdigitalhome.com

1. The Idea

For starters it’s very important to have a good idea. The great thing about the Burton’s world style is that any idea, no matter how basic or complicated it is, can easily be transformed into an image if the creative method is learned well. Atmosphere is everything! The atmosphere of these images can be described as “tragicomic goth”, tragic because of a certain dose of morbidness that it has, and comic because of the fact that, even though they are on the edge of being disturbing, these pictures are quite harmless and almost cartoonish in their nature.

In eternal half-obscurity, Burton’s World typically contains such elements as: gradient skies, moon, sun, clouds, stars, mist, half-transparent illumination, a casually distorted gothic style, 2D silhouettes and, of course, as many details as you can think of .

The general rule is: the more details- the better.

2. Resolution and Brushes

Because of the purposely distorted nature of the images, you will seldom use normal dimensions for your work. On the contrary, the more unorthodox image dimension the better. That’s why the resolution I choose is 1280×200.

You can see the brushes used in this tutorial here.

3. The Sky

The first thing we create in our Burton’s world is the sky. Make a new Photoshop layer and simply call it “sky”. Then go to Layer Style>Gradient Overlay. And while working with gradients is fairly simple, the crucial thing to remember that the sky gradient is one of the most important parts of the picture because it sets the mood and atmosphere of your scene (with the quality and intensity of it’s colors), so choose your colors carefully.

As far as this tutorial is concerned, we chose a midnight scene with a full moon, so a blue-white gradient seemed most fitting.

4. The Landscape

As mentioned before- the landscape consists only of silhouettes and is entirely 2D. This layer (which you can name “the ground”), should be placed, for now, right above the sky layer. Pick some thick brush with sharp edges and start creating your world. One of the possible results might look something like the image above.

5. Adding Details to the Sky

I did emphasize earlier that it is the sky that probably has the highest impact on image’s atmosphere, and thus it is necessary to provide it with certain details:

6.The Moon and the Sun

These two are created basically the same way and if you wish you can add them both to your image (it’s your world). If you want your picture to have a full moon then create new layer, name it “The Moon” and draw a circle filled with a pale color (it’s best to make that circle peculiarly huge in order to provide some of the
fantasy atmosphere).

It is always nice to add some sort of Outer Glow (Layer Style> Outer Glow) and a gradient (from top towards the bottom, from white towards pale gray, for example).

Now let’s give the moon some craters. For that you will need a new layer (unpredictably named “craters”) and a “drops” brush to use on it. The color you’re using should be some pale gray.

7. The Stars,Comets and Fog

Stars: Paint the sky using white dots of different sizes and apply the Outer Glow effect.

Comet: I added a comet as a small detail. The comet’s tail is drawn using a white brush with jagged edges and the comet head’s flash is easy achievable using the Polygonal Lasso Tool (PLT), which you will, (along with regular Lasso Too) use quite often.

The Fog: Create “The Fog” layer, set its opacity to 40%, use brushes of different sizes (white color in this case) to draw the fog, and finally, place it below “The Ground” layer.

8. Adding details to the ground

The Grass
Use “the grass” brush draw the grass which should, more or less, follow the contours of the landscape.
The Trees
When drawing trees think fractals. It’s a quite simple principle, but it requires patience and gradualism. First, pick the 8px brush and create the root and trunk. After that you need to gradually branch it out using smaller and smaller brushes and thus creating deck with branches set as densely as you want. Use sharp-edged brushes for optimum precision.

8. The Architecture

Remember, in this world everything is displaced and is seems like all of the objects are affected by some spontaneous chaos that stands totally against all the rules of physics. In spite of science- the structure exists. Burton’s gothic world is characterized by broken lines, plenty of curves, spirals and sharp edges. Everything that, in reality, would be standing straight and normal- in this dimension should be as crumpled as possible, sometimes bordering upon the ridiculous. You are supposed to try to make EVERYTHING look endlessly old and a bit spooky. Feel free to insert thousands of small cracks and crannies and that sort of stuff. The more of those kinds of details you create- the better. This is, in fact, the main area for the “architect” of the Burton’s World to express the multiplicity of his imagination. It all may turn out to be quite cute…

9. Finishing touches

Provide your picture with all the details you can think of, cause that is literally what gives it soul. After adding such details you can end up with something like this:

Click on image for full view

The End

Clipping Masks

The most visually impressive Photoshop techniques are often based on the simplest principles. In this tutorial I will demonstrate how to cut text-shaped selections out of photographs (and other images), producing a solid framework on which to base logos, commercial artwork, or anything else that you desire.

Step 1: Create a brand new document of a suitable size with a single background layer filled with a solid black colour (you can change this later - the black just makes the first few steps easier). Use the horizontal The type tools create type on an image.'); Activate();" onmouseout="deActivate()" alt="">Type Tool to create a word in pure white. In my case I've used the 'Eras Bold ITC' font at size 110. Don't worry if you don't want to use this particular typeface - just select something with a solid bulky look (script-style fonts rarely work well).

Step 2: Open up the image you want to use as a separate document, Select > All using the main Photoshop menu, and click Edit > Copy to pop the image into the clipboard. Close the document and go back to the one we were working on in Step 1. Select Edit > Paste to put a copy of your image into a new layer on top of all the others (with the type layer immediately below it in the layers palette).

Step 3: Now all you need to do is select Layer > Create Clipping Mask (or CTRL+G on the keyboard) to group the image with the text. And there you go - a simple yet beautiful text object cut out of an image.

Variations: It should be remembered, of course, that this effect is not complete in itself and needs further personalisation before it looks professional. Layer effects are particularly good additions, as the example to the left shows. Also remember that you aren't limited to text. In fact, any solid high contrast shape will work just as well.

- Tutorial written by Man1c M0g

Glossy Drip Text Effect.

Preview:
Glossy Drip Text Effect.

Step 1:

Let’s start out by creating a new file. I used a 500×400 pixels canvas set at 72dpi, and I filled my background with white color. Now make a new layer set and name it 'Glossy Text Effect'.

Select the Horizontal Type Tool then set the font family to Arial Rounded MT Bold, regular, 90 pt, crisp and #00FF48 color shade. In a new text layer type your website name on the canvas.

Step 2:

Under Layer Style(Layer > Layer Style) add a Drop Shadow, Inner Shadow, Outer Glow and Inner Glow blending options to your green text layer.

 Result:

Step 3:

In a new text layer add your name again but with a black color shade. Then nudge the black text to the left by a couple of pixels.

Step 4:

Under Layer Style(Layer > Layer Style) add a Drop Shadow and Inner Shadow, blending options to your black text layer. Then set the layer's blending mode to Lighten.

 Result:

Step 5:

Duplicate your first green text layer design from step one then create a new layer. Now merge both layers so the text layer turns into a regular layer with the layer styles permanently attached. Then apply a motion blur effect to through Filter > Blur, use the settings below.

 Result:

Step 6:

Under Layer Style(Layer > Layer Style) add an Inner Glow blending option to your motioned text design layer.

 Result:

Step 7:

On your Layers Window move the motioned text design layer behind all the current layers.

Results:

Glossy Drip Text Effect.

Random Boxes Text Effect with Actionscript 3

In this tutorial I will show you how you can create a simple Flash text effect when the mouse hovers over the text. This is quite easy to accomplish with a little help from Actionscript 3.

(Either JavaScript is not active or you are using an old version of Adobe Flash Player. Please install the newest Flash Player.)

Setting up the environment

1. Create a new Flash document of size 250×250.

2. First, create a static text field and type some text in it (e.g. FlashMyMind). Position the text in the center of the stage.

3. Convert the text field to a movie clip. Name it “My Text” and set the registration point to the top left corner. My movie clip ended up looking the following.

4. Give the movie clip an instance name of “myText“.

5. Now draw a rectangle of size 10×10 to the stage. Use some stroke e.g. 2 pixels. The colors won’t matter since we will manipulate it with Actionscript 3.

6. Convert the rectangle to a movie clip. Name it “My Rectangle” and set the registration to the center.

7. Linkage the movie clip to a class named “MyRectangle“. If you don’t know how to linkage movie clips, please see step 4 from the External Classes tutorial.

8. Remove the rectangle movie clip from the stage.

Moving to Actionscript 3

9. Create a new layer for actionscript and type the following.

//We use a timer to create the rectangles when the mouse is over the text.
//This timer will send an event every 0.02 seconds.
var timer:Timer = new Timer(20, 0);
timer.addEventListener(TimerEvent.TIMER, createRectangle);

//We want to know wheter the mouse is over the text or not
var mouseOverText:Boolean
